QUESTION: the vehicle starts but runs rough, stumbles, and intermittently stalls out, it is worse when cold, but still does it hot, the check engine light is on, I dont have any pick up power when accelerating, feels like it is in third gear, the code is e40, power steering pressure switch open, can this be the cause, the light came on when this started to happen and no other codes are in the system

ANSWER: This code will not cause acceleration or performance problems. It CAN cause stalling at idle or when going around turns at idle speed.

I would have your exhaust system checked for possible obstructions, Possibly an internal catalytic converter coming apart internally ?.

QUESTION: I checked exhaust, it is ok, I fixed to power steering leak and replaced the switch, I still have the code and problem, the problem happened all at once, I drove the car to work with no problems, the car sat for 10 hours, got off work the problem started at start up, stumbling idle, stalling, engine light on and vehicle starts out in third gear not first gear, engine seems to have power, the code was e40, after driving to parts store and back I had codes for idle air control and egr valve, I dont know where to go or where to look, any sugestions

If you are mechanicaly inclined or know of someone who is, You will need a DIGITAL MULTIMETER, Simple electrical schematics, Test procedures and picture locations of the components within the system that is causing you problems of which can't be done on this website which only allows one picture.
