Question
Hi- we have a well worked on 77 deville, recently the starter will not respond to the key, turn over or come on, we pulled the starter and checked it at Checker and it works, we re-wired the small wire to starter (burned out), and reinstalled, and still it will not turn over with key- how could we trouble shoot the key ignition? Thanks- Phil

Answer
On top of the steering column under the dash is the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

When you turn the ignition key it pushes a thin metal rod down inside the steering column and pushes the electrical contacts together inside of this electrical switch which in turn sends battery voltage to the small wire on the starter thus engaging the starter.

If you are mechanicaly inclined or know of someone who is, You will need simple electrical schematics, Test procedures and picture locations of the components within the system that is causing you problems of which can't be done on this website which only allows one picture. I do not have a website so you will have to e-mail: onlineautohelp@msn.com in order to obtain the information.
