Question
QUESTION: My mechanic just replaced what he called a "map sensor" due to what he said was "blueish" smoke coming from my exhaust. What exactly does the "map sensor" do?

ANSWER: It is one of many sensors that send information to the computer in order for the computer to determine the correct amount of fuel to deliver to each engine cylinder.

Bluish smoke is usually a sign of excessive oil usage due to worn out piston oil rings.

Did your blue smoke go away ?. Most likely NOT.

QUESTION: I can't tell if it's whitish or bluish....but it did cut it down some.

"piston oil rings" sounds like and expensive fix!!

Answer
It IS.

What you can try and sometimes it works quite well.

Go to any auto parts store and ask for a can of TOP ENGINE CLEANER and follow the directives on the can.

What this does is remove the years of carbon buildup on the TOP of the pistons which can cause blue smoke as well as cleans all the crap from the oil rings on the pistons.
