94 Cad. Fleetwood; changed sparkplugs/wires---car sputters & shakes when standing still, will ease up in Neutral or park but in drive at a light or stop sign it will make you seasick, it shuts off often, when i remove gas cap, i hear air pressure being released, i smell gas, after i fill it up, it barely will move 5 feet, it fills like it's gonna shake apart. Fiance says shop changed f.filter, pump, plugs, wires, radiator, i'm about to replace the distributor, am i headed in right direction, and i saw smoke the other day coming from behind steering wheel column, maybe unrelated, haven't seen it since.

IS or HAS the CHECK ENGINE light ever illuminated while driving the vehicle and or has any other lights illuminated or any messages from the message display center ?.
