Question
I have a 1996 Cadillac sedan deville, when I try to start it up it reads: Starting disable due to theft system remove ignition key, then it says wait 3 minutes and start ignition. I wait the three minutes but it still doesn't start. I got the computer diagnostic codes but I don't know what to do next. These are the codes

History: pc0603, pc1632, ip1552, tc0027, pz1552, pz1558
Current: ip2780

Please help, What do I do next?

Answer
Hello,

Codes no longer mean anything to me. I no longer work with computer diagnostic codes from the 90's.

What I can tell you that one of the most common problems in that worthless GM anti theft known as vats is that the two very thin wires leading from the ignition lock through the column break inside the insulation. What you will need is a new ignition lock from the dealer for $500 or the same exact part from a locksmith for $250 or you can bypass the vats altogether for $100 bucks.

To try to start it, tilt the column up and down in different positions and try starting. Most of the time doing this will get the broken wire back temporarly and engine should start. Go to a local alarm store and tell them you need the vats bypassed. If you do this have a hidden starter kill instslled to protect it from theft. Don't be fooled, old cars are very popular to thieves.

I suggest all this because 9 out of 10 vats fail. After all of that clear the codes. If related to the anti theft, your problems should be handled.

Good luck!

Alarm system questions cannot be answered on this forum. These systems are not what I can answer. Without being physically at the vehicle and not knowing what kind of electrical service has been done on the vehicle, there is no possible way to give an accurate answer over the internet. My expertise is in Ignition/key based anti-theft systems. These issues include GM VATS (resistor chip in key blade) PASSLOCK (MRD)-ignition lock rotation based, no special ignition key and the PKIII Transponder (computer chip in key) systems. These systems are not alarm based and are integral with the starting of the engine. This is why I cannot diagnose alarm problems without physically looking at the vehicle: Alarm systems are a completely different annimal than ignition key/lock based anti-theft system. Many alarm questions come from vehicles 10 years old, and since older, many hands that had been involved over the years.I am an expert in all GM factory (ignition/key based)systems. Alarm system questions pose to many situations beyond my knowledge as to what has been done to the vehicle over the years. Some guy may have actually wired the stereo into the alarm system. Who knows? Over my past 30 years in vehicle wiring repair, I have seen unbelievable wiring disaters done by guys that consider themselves "mechanics." I have seen stereos and alarms intalled using surgical tape. I have seen modules burn up, un-fused circuits, wiring jambed between the doors and even lamp cord used for a starter kill. To answer alarm questions over the internet without examining the vehicle is like asking; What does it take to remove a dent?
