Question
QUESTION: How do I R&R my cigarette lighter in my 1999 cadillac sys. The lighter somtimes works an somtimes it doesn't. So I know somthing is arking. So I jus need to know how to take apart the center counsel so I can take a look at it?

ANSWER: Hello,

It's common for the element to go bad. Remove lighter (Part you push in)and see if knob unscrews. If so, you can go to the dealer to replace the element or buy the knob and element as an assembly. Now, I am assuming you use it to light cigarettes.

If you are using for a power supply and only works at times, chances are you have a connection issue.

Let me know what you are trying to fix.

QUESTION: Yes I am trying to use it as power supply. I do think its a connection problem. So how do I get to the wiring behind this unit?

Answer
Hello,

I don't have any books on a car this old anymore, however could you send me some pics to robo14@aol.com? I need to jar my memory if possible, nothing fancy and if you have a camera on your cell, that would be great. Need pics of the outer console, location of of the lighter in conjunction to the console and I am sure I can help you out. Some lighters will pull right out. Others a cover panel surrounding the lighter can be removed and others require the removal of the console.
Please be kind enough to give me the year of the STS also. Thanks.

Alarm system questions cannot be answered on this forum. These systems are not what I can answer. Without being physically at the vehicle and not knowing what kind of electrical service has been done on the vehicle, there is no possible way to give an accurate answer over the internet. My expertise is in Ignition/key based anti-theft systems. These issues include GM VATS (resistor chip in key blade) PASSLOCK (MRD)-ignition lock rotation based, no special ignition key and the PKIII Transponder (computer chip in key) systems. These systems are not alarm based and are integral with the starting of the engine. This is why I cannot diagnose alarm problems without physically looking at the vehicle: Alarm systems are a completely different annimal than ignition key/lock based anti-theft system. Many alarm questions come from vehicles 10 years old, and since older, many hands that had been involved over the years.I am an expert in all GM factory (ignition/key based)systems. Alarm system questions pose to many situations beyond my knowledge as to what has been done to the vehicle over the years. Some guy may have actually wired the stereo into the alarm system. Who knows? Over my past 30 years in vehicle wiring repair, I have seen unbelievable wiring disaters done by guys that consider themselves "mechanics." I have seen stereos and alarms intalled using surgical tape. I have seen modules burn up, un-fused circuits, wiring jambed between the doors and even lamp cord used for a starter kill. To answer alarm questions over the internet without examining the vehicle is like asking; What does it take to remove a dent?
