Question
QUESTION: used catera, 1999, have original key but the tip broke off in ignition. have disabled SIR, removed steering wheel. what we are planing to do is put in a new lock cylinder and use a standard key while the original key is taped next to the anti-theft antenna. we do this because (a) someone already tried to drill out the lock and (b)we wish to install remote start and use non-chip keys. have you ever done this and will it work. the key has a chip, no resistors in the cylinder as far as we know from what we have read. thanks

ANSWER: Hello,

Can't tell you if it will work and the distance from the head of the original key is crucial because the chip is located in the head of the old key. If you have the head too close or too far from the antenna, engine won't start.

Why not have it done right? Have a locksmith come out and make you a new key and lock cylinder?

QUESTION: couldn't find a locksmith that would do it. Dealer only. $100 for key, $100 for programming, $100+ for lock cylinder,$45 for codes and cuts, $75 for tow. guess I'm cheap but you are probably right. I can get a whole steering column used for $150 complete with the key. the reason I asked was because we want to install remote starting. anyway, thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Hello,

Your right on the used column, except for one thing. You still will need that key reprogrammed.

I know there are many locksmiths getting out of cars because the scanning equipment to program keys is just too much. Google ALOA (Associated Locksmiths of America) and they might be able to refer you to a locksmith in your area. Remember, you are talking dealer prices on the parts and if you can get a locksmith, the price will be much less.

Thing that sucks is that these crap so- called "anti-theft systems" that don't stop theft, will get an insurance theft claim denied, but the one real thing for sure--they are a pain in the butt for the owner.

QUESTION: Thanks for your help. this should fix my "turn signal wont auto shut off " problem too, with the new column, and save me $$$. Do you have any info on which Catera parts interchange with the an Opel Omega B, which is what a Catera really is, like suspension bushings or anything else? Thanks again for your help.

Answer
Hello,

Now there is something I did not know. When you say Opel, I thick of the 70s Opel Cadet. I knew GM owned Opel, but thought they sold that line 10 years ago.

I wish I could tell you cross reference on the Catera, but that is one vehicle I don't know what is interchangable.

Sorry!

Alarm system questions cannot be answered on this forum. These systems are not what I can answer. Without being physically at the vehicle and not knowing what kind of electrical service has been done on the vehicle, there is no possible way to give an accurate answer over the internet. My expertise is in Ignition/key based anti-theft systems. These issues include GM VATS (resistor chip in key blade) PASSLOCK (MRD)-ignition lock rotation based, no special ignition key and the PKIII Transponder (computer chip in key) systems. These systems are not alarm based and are integral with the starting of the engine. This is why I cannot diagnose alarm problems without physically looking at the vehicle: Alarm systems are a completely different annimal than ignition key/lock based anti-theft system. Many alarm questions come from vehicles 10 years old, and since older, many hands that had been involved over the years.I am an expert in all GM factory (ignition/key based)systems. Alarm system questions pose to many situations beyond my knowledge as to what has been done to the vehicle over the years. Some guy may have actually wired the stereo into the alarm system. Who knows? Over my past 30 years in vehicle wiring repair, I have seen unbelievable wiring disaters done by guys that consider themselves "mechanics." I have seen stereos and alarms intalled using surgical tape. I have seen modules burn up, un-fused circuits, wiring jambed between the doors and even lamp cord used for a starter kill. To answer alarm questions over the internet without examining the vehicle is like asking; What does it take to remove a dent?
