Question
I changed the instrament cluster. With all the digital messages and speedometer. Well the dash board went dim and I changed it. The problem now is that the security system won't allow me to start it, but when I put the old back in it starts right up. No problem no reset. Is there any way I can bypass that? If so how?(by the way I got the other cluster from the junk yard and everything works just won't start due to security. HELP PLEASE!!!0

The changing of the IP has nothing to do with the VATS (resistor chip anti-theft starter disable.
However, this is just a guess on my part, you may be dealing with an ip that may not be set up for the optional factory alarm system. These are 2 separate systems. VATS can be bypassed, alarm can't with losing major circuits.
That is the only thing that I can think of as to your problem. See if you were switching out the IPs and if it was a VATS problem, neither IP would let the engine start. You are however changing IPs so obviously something in the instrument panel is different.
The stupid thing about many of these cars is that they commonly use one security light for two completely different systems which makes them hard to diagnose.
You can call any GM dealer and see if they still have the build sheet with the option codes. You could have them fax over, or try a google search for "1997 option code for factory alarm." If you can find it, you will see a 3 digit code like LMM, or LM3. Then look in your glove box or under the spare tire cover. You will see a label with all these codes and search for that code. They are in alphabetical order.

My thought is where your car has the optional alarm and the IP you are using does not. The only difference between starting or not is the IP and yes on the factory alarm, the security light is tied in with the headlights, locks and everything else. That is why you can't bypass the factory alarm. If so equipped, you would have to get an ip from a car that you have the label in where you can find if alarm equipped. Was about an $800 option, so was not real popular.

Alarm system questions cannot be answered on this forum. These systems are not what I can answer. Without being physically at the vehicle and not knowing what kind of electrical service has been done on the vehicle, there is no possible way to give an accurate answer over the internet. My expertise is in Ignition/key based anti-theft systems. These issues include GM VATS (resistor chip in key blade) PASSLOCK (MRD)-ignition lock rotation based, no special ignition key and the PKIII Transponder (computer chip in key) systems. These systems are not alarm based and are integral with the starting of the engine. This is why I cannot diagnose alarm problems without physically looking at the vehicle: Alarm systems are a completely different annimal than ignition key/lock based anti-theft system. Many alarm questions come from vehicles 10 years old, and since older, many hands that had been involved over the years.I am an expert in all GM factory (ignition/key based)systems. Alarm system questions pose to many situations beyond my knowledge as to what has been done to the vehicle over the years. Some guy may have actually wired the stereo into the alarm system. Who knows? Over my past 30 years in vehicle wiring repair, I have seen unbelievable wiring disaters done by guys that consider themselves "mechanics." I have seen stereos and alarms intalled using surgical tape. I have seen modules burn up, un-fused circuits, wiring jambed between the doors and even lamp cord used for a starter kill. To answer alarm questions over the internet without examining the vehicle is like asking; What does it take to remove a dent?
