Question
A car comes to a stop six seconds after the driver applies the brakes. While the brakes are on the following velocites are recorded.
Time since brake applied 0   2   4   6
Velocity           88      45   16   0
1. Give lower and upper estimates for the distance the car travelled after the brakes were applied.
2. On a sketch of velocity against time show the lower and upper estimates of part.


Answer
Compute the average speed for each period and compute how far is traveled in 2 seconds at that speed.  The answer is the sum - that's a good guess.

To compute a max, take 88 mph for the first two seconds, 45 mph for the second 2 seconds, and 16 mph for the third 2 seconds.

To compute a min, take 45 for the first 2 and s 16 for the second two.

On the graph, the maximum is the straight line above for each 2 seconds and the minimum is the straight line below.

I aquired well over 40 hours of upper division courses. This was well over the number that were required. I graduated with honors in both my BS and MS degree from Oregon State University. I was allowed to jump into a few junior level courses my sophomore year.

I have been nominated as the expert of the month several times. All of my scores right now are at least a 9.8 average (out of 10).
