Question:  Differentiate:  y = (1 + cos x) / (1 – cos x)
................................................
Hi, Marie,

y = (1 + cos x)
   -----------
   (1 – cos x)

Looks like quotient rule:

dy   ()() - ()()
-- = ------------
dx        ()^2

dy   (1 – cos x)(- sin x) - (1 + cos x)(sin x)
-- = -----------------------------------------
dx        (1 – cos x)^2

dy    - sin x + cos x sin x - sin x - cos x sin x
-- = --------------------------------------------
dx           (1 – cos x)^2

dy    - 2 sin x
-- = -----------------
dx    (1 – cos x)^2

Next time, tell me:
-- what you are studying (exactly, not just 'calculus')
-- what you already tried to do.
and I can help more.

All topics in first-year calculus including infinite series, max-min and related rate problems. Also trigonometry and complex numbers, theory of equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. I can also try (but not guarantee) to answer questions on Analysis -- sequences, limits, continuity.

Experience

I taught all mathematics subjects from elementary algebra to differential equations at a two-year college in New York City for 25 years.
