Expertise Any kind of mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability, statistics, etc.). I also have answered some questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Subject: Calculus Question
Question Find an equation of the line passing through (2,5) and perpendicular to y=3
x+1.
Answer That's y=3x+1, right? Note that they were on spli
t lines, just like this...
The equation is y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y intercept.
To be perpendicular, the slope needs to be -1/m.
You now have y=-(1/m)x+b as the equation for which you are looking. The variable m has been given in the equation, so 1/m can be calculated.
Put in (2,5) for (x,y) and find what b is.
