Question
Intelligence reports to the U.S. fleet admiral the an enemy task force is located 120 nautical miles 42(degrees) east of north and is streaming 39(degrees)30(minutes) east of south at 25 knots.(1knot = 1nautical mile per hour).A destroyer group capable of 40 knots is dispatched to intercept the enemy. In what direction should they stream and how long will it take to intercept the enemy task force?
(Hint:Use law of sines)

Please answer it with detail and provide a diagram also...

Answer
Refer to the drawing.

Note that the left 40° was given, so at the top we have another 40°.  This is because the lines are parallel and being crossed by another line.

Note also that we don't know how long the sides with 25t and 40t are, but we do know that they are 25t and 40t where t is time.  This is not necessary to know sinces t/t cancels.

Once Z has been found, the following can be done.  Using the law of sines again, it can be said, calling x the side with 40 mph, that x/sin79.5° = 25/sinZ.  Using the same principly on the side at 25mph, it can be found as well.
