One way is to use a square grid to place over the region, then count the number of
squares contained within and estimate the partial squares that are also contained
within the region.

For example, see the attached image.
We can clearly see 38 unit squares (assuming each square is 1x1),
and I estimated the area of all the partial squares to sum to about
be between 2.5 and 3...thus, the area is between 40.5 and 41 (approximately).
