Expert: Ralph Meyer Date: 7/13/2008 Subject: Areas to live on LRT line
Question Hi,
I have been through the posts and it seems South and SW are the areas to be in for a family with a young kid. Will be working in downtown Calgary near 9th Av SE and 1st street. What will be a good family friendly(safe, good day care, parks etc) area to take an apartment/condo in from which can get to work quickly(20 mins or so) using the LRT. Need a minimum 2+den and preferably a 3 bedroom in a building that is close to LRT or has direct access to station(like quite a few buildings here in toronto). Travel a bit so want to spare family the snow removal part hence prefer a condo where all this is taken care of.
Please advise on what areas(stations) to look at. Rent budget in vicinity of $1750.
Thanks for this wonderful service you are providing to all.
Regards,
Mayank
Answer Hello Mayank:
First congratulations on your moving to Calgary. If you look at www.calgarytransit.com, click on the LRT. This will show you the route and stations. I would avoid Erlton and Stampede area, noisy, busy not for families, particularly when your away.
Therefore, I suggest, Chinook LRT, Heritage, Southland and Anderson for affordability. Places I could suggest are, Hays Farm, but may not allow your son? I'm not 100%sure. Southampton Green, (By anderson LRT), Carriage Park and Candlewood Condos between Heritage and Southland. As A mover, these are better areas to live in.
Also on 56 ave Sw, 57Ave SW and 58 Ave Sw are some apartment buildings near Chinook, Canyon Meadows has a bunch of buildings too.
You need to do research on the web through www.homebase.ca, www.calgaryherald.com, www.powerproperties.net, www.gilpropertymanagement.com. I find moving into these areas are best for families. I have moved and sold people on Gil property and Power. Both are excellent companies to deal with for your first place.
These are places to look.
Please remember my advice to other Ontarions, when your in Calgary, think like a Calgarian, Don't Use the term In Toronto we ...., you will get looked at and may not get the answer you like. (Its like comparing an old love to a new love) We think very differently out here. We work outside the box, hate gov't interference in our lives. We laughed at Ottawa regulating the colour of garbage bags and size. You can acclimatize by reading the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun online. I am straight forward so excuse my being forthright but others whom have come here have said to me, thank you for being very honest. People who don't succeed, fail because of expectations or dishonesty in what they are told. So Here is straight HONESTY: We work hard, sometimes I work 6 to 7 days a week, but then get rewarded with beautiful vacations, on the jobs rewards, (ie an employer of mine, paid for my dishwasher and patio deck) great playing time, the term We work hard, but Play even harder. You will enjoy life here, if you give up your thoughts from where you live and acclimatize to Calgary. There are many job benefits given to employees now. Moving to Calgary, you have many options, but get your telephone, utilities set up before you arrive. Keep all receipts for your moving expenses to claim on your income taxes. the form is called Moving Expenses Deduction from Revenue Canada.
{Please pardon my grammer}.
