Question
Hi Tracy - my husband and I are going to fly into Reno and rent a car.  Then the plan is off to Tahoe, go up around Mt Shasta, then over to Eureka and the Redwoods - then start down the coast.  Is there anything that you think is a MUST SEE for us while we're in the Northern areas?  We'll be in CA from June 10 to July 1st to have 3 weeks to enjoy the whole state.  We're not much on shopping, but love to see beautiful places, lovely little towns, do new and fun things.  We can't do alot of walking (bad knees), but can certainly do some.  Any insights you can give would be GREATLY appreciated!!  If there are "touristy" things you think we should see those r ok too - but if you know of even better stuff we'd love to hear it!  Thanks!  Gail & John Perry

Answer
How far south are you planning on going? Since it sounds like you have time- I'd start in Eureka and just go down the coast the whole way There are some adorable small towns that you'll like- Mendocino and Fort Bragg have beautiful views and you may catch some whales. I'd also recommend stops in Monterey/Carmel, San Luis Obispo and a small detour up Hwy 246 to Solvang. Each of these towns have cute little shops, great food and fun things to do. I love the Monterey Bay Aquarium and that might be something you'd enjoy too. If you've never been to Hearst Castle it's worth a stop. Although completely touristy, it's something really different than anywhere else in CA.

If you need more details or ideas, I'd be happy to help out!
