California/dogs and fishing

Question
I live in Escondido ca. and have been searching for a lake my wife and I can take our dog to and do some fishing, but I find a distinct lake of places to go. I know that Big Bear is dog friendly, but with gas prices what they are there is no way I can get up there for a day of fishing. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Tim,

Here we are in SoCal, enjoying the sunshine and lack of rain. And yet, people wonder why there are no lakes here.

Sadly, we're at the mercy of companies and government agencies to provide us with places to fish and cool off. Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead is a logical choice, and a good one, since it's much cooler up there than here. However, all is not lost. There is a new lake, called Diamond Valley Lake, in southern Riverside County which might fit the bill. It is the biggest lake in Southern California, and has fishing. The lake is still new, and not fully developed, but open for business. Check out dvlake.com for more information.
