Question Hi we are from the U K touring in october with two children 12 and 9. We plan to stay in LA for four days then move on to Los vegas. Was wondering how you get around when the RV is hooked up on a site. Can you drive the RV any where like to attractions or the supermarket or do people just leave it hooked up and use other transport. Also is it easy to get travellers cheques changed we hope to stay in KOA pomona Fairplex. This is the first RV holiday and the first time in the USA. Any help would be great thanks.
Answer Hi Christine,
October is an excellent time to tour SoCal and southern Nevada. However, I don't envy you learning to drive such a vehicle from the opposite side.
I don't know why you chose me, but it is quite fortunate, since I do a lot of RV'ing (or perhaps that's why you chose me).
Getting around in an RV can be somewhat difficult, but not impossible. After the first couple times you hook up, it gets pretty easy hooking up and "unhooking". We have done this in a number of areas. You have to weigh the inconvenience of hooking up/unhooking and driving a larger vehicle with the cost of renting/hiring a car.
Some attractions are a LOT easier to get into than others. For example, Disneyland is quite easy to enter. As you enter the large parking structure, stay to the left. You will be directed to a large open, uncovered parking area which is right next to the tram stop. Likewise, for Universal Studios, you will be directed to a lot where they park busses (coaches) and RV's. I would say the only problem might be driving in the notorious LA traffic. This weekend upcoming is a holiday weekend, so I am taking our RV out, and I'm not looking forward to the traffic.
When we do go places in the RV, most of the time we park the RV and leave it there, utilizing any local public transportation. In LA that is difficult. I also bring my bicycle, so that I can ride it to the grocery store. However, I am familiar with the Fairplex KOA, and it's a bit of a drive to the nearest major grocery store (Von's, about 2km). I would recommend leaving the RV hooked up, and renting/hiring a car whilst in the area. That would give you much more mobility. Local car agencies will come and pick you up from the RV park. I've had good luck with Enterprise, why not give them a call? 2855 Foothill Blvd, Laverne, CA(909) 596-9566. When it's time to move on to Vegas, you can return it.
