California/Beach Camping with Children

Question
I've read about your answer on the Carpenteria State Beach campsite.  Wondering if it is first come first serve or do I must make a reservation.  Also, do you know of any other beach campsites that are suitable for children and are on a first come first serve basis.

Answer
Hi Jay,

Carpinteria is by reservation only. You need to go to www.reserveamerica.com. Frankly, I doubt you will get a campsite for the summer at this late date. Campsites are available on the first day of the month, and sites for May go on November 1, June on December 1, etc. (Note: Carpinteria used to be on first-come, first-served years ago. Just about everybody agrees that the Internet Reservation system is the fairest, best way to do this. )

I believe that Gaviota State Beach is on a first-come, first-served system. However, it's not very kid-friendly. Also, Jalama Beach is that way, but people go to extraordinary lengths to get a campsite there. www.jalamabeach.com

Good luck!

I have lived in Southern California my entire life. I'm a "local", with expert knowledge of Southern California. I've done a lot of extensive traveling to NorCal, so I can provide answers about northern California as a visitor, and southern California as a local.

Not that this matters, but since it's required, I have a Bachelor's Degree. I also have a Master's Degree in the University of Life.
