Question
We are planning a trip to the bay area, will be our first, during labor day weekend.  I have heard it best to stay in Vallejo rather than fisherman's wharf? what would you recommend?  I was also told not to drive that the streets are congested and parking will be difficult, we are planning on taking the Amtrak from Nevada area.

Answer
I believe that Amtrak has service to Emoryville, which is near Oakland, and then bus service to SF.  I don't recommend Vallejo as a place to stay, unless you have a friend who lives there.  Vallejo is about 45 minutes from the city by car or by ferry.  The ferry connection is convenient for commuters, but the city of Vallejo is a troubled town not attractive to tourists.  But, don't stay in Fisherman's Wharf either because that part of town is very congested and not close to MUNI trains, the rapid transit system for the city.  Lower priced places are found along Lombard in the Marina District, while the best location is generally believed to be near Union Square somewhere.  It's definitely true that renting a car is a waste of time and money in SF.  Take the excellent public transit systems there.  There are trains, trolleys, cable cars, buses, and ferries.  The cable car system is mostly a joy ride now given the high price, but the trolley cars, which are restored antiques collected from around the world, are priced at the same rate as the buses and trains.  Hope this helps.
