California/fall camping

Question
Hi Ernest~
My siblings and I all live in the LA area.  We migrated out here from Colorado.  Every fall we get a little nostalgic for the big colorful changes we are used to back home.  This year we have decided to take a camping trip somewhere in California that gets colorful during the fall.  Do you have any suggestions for a beautiful fall destination?  We have been camping at Pismo's North Beach during the summer(which we loved), but are not sure if the seasons change much there.  We were also considering Yosemite.  Thanks for any help!

Answer
Hi Bonnie,

Yes, the seasonal changes in Southern California are very subtle, although I do recommend a trip out to Anza Borrego or elsewhere in the desert during early spring for spectacular desert  bloom.  Also, in the San Bernardino Mountains there is an equally spectacular bloom of California's state flower--the Golden Poppy.

As for Fall changes in leaf color, I do recommend Yosemite highly.  This would be in late October or November before the first snows, so camping can be done but be prepared.  Also, consider a trip to the Napa Valley Wine Country during this time of year.  The seasonal change in the vineyards are truely lovely.  Finally, along the Hwy 49 Sierra foothill trail of gold mining towns is a regular Fall show of colors.

I address in writing and images visitor aspects of trips to Yosemite, Napa Valley, and some foothill towns at Virtualtourist.com under the membername atufft, if you are interested in more detailed information.

Have fun with your siblings...Alan
