Question
Dear Steve,

I am looking for some places to stop and camp from Los Angeles up to Carmel in the middle of February.  I will admit, I am not a camper.  I have only gone a couple of times, however, my children and husband would like to do this so I am willing to give it a try again.  We will have our two dogs with us as well.  Do you have any suggestions for nice places to stop along the way?  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kristy,

I can definitely recommend Carpinteria State Beach. Check out some of my other answers for more details on Carpinteria. This is one of the best, most family-friendly campgrounds anywhere. And if you've had a rough day, you don't have to cook. You can walk into town or even have pizza delivered to your campsite!

If you cannot get into Carp, then check out El Capitan or Refugio State Beaches.

Since you're not much of a camper, check out Flying Flags RV park in Buellton. They have some tent spaces available. It's pricier than the state parks, but has a pool, laundry, and lots of amenities.

Just north of San Luis Obispo, San Simeon State Beach is another good campground. It's just down the road from Hearst Castle and Piedras Blancas elephant seal preserve. It's a good jumping-off point if you are going to take the Big Sur Road.

In Big Sur, you have Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. You also have Big Sur Cabins and Campground, a private campground. This is only a short drive from Carmel.

Have fun!

Expertise

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I`ve lived in the Valley, west side, east side, and South Bay, so I`m an expert on getting around town. I`m knowledgeable about all of the Southern California tourist attractions. I am also an expert on state beaches in Southern California, and have an expansive camping background. No relocation/moving questions, please.

Experience

I have lived in Southern California my entire life. I'm a "local", with expert knowledge of Southern California. I've done a lot of extensive traveling to NorCal, so I can provide answers about northern California as a visitor, and southern California as a local.

Education/Credentials
Not that this matters, but since it's required, I have a Bachelor's Degree. I also have a Master's Degree in the University of Life.
