Question
Hi Steve,

We want to have a family camping, before we send our child to college. We did couple of camping when our child was little.
We live in about 45 miles east of Los Angeles, CA.
We might have time from Friday evening to Sunday.
Can you suggest a nice camping grounds near lake or river with lots of shade and fun activities to do?
If we can not take Saturday off, then is there a scenic route with things to do from Saturday noon to Sunday?
Please help...
Thank you!
Jane

Answer
Hi Jane,

Since we don't have much in the way of rivers, we're either going to have to go with lakes, or head for the beach on this one.

For local mountain camping (within 100 miles), Serrano Campground by Big Bear Lake is a good place for mountain camping. You're close to the water, and you have access to hiking, or just visiting the town of Big Bear.

Personally, I'm a beach camper. Nothing beats the sound of the waves, and those cool ocean breezes make you forget the heat of the Inland Empire. My favorite beaches near Santa Barbara are Carpinteria State Beach, El Capitan, and Refugio State Beaches. Of the 3, Carp is my favorite by far. To the south, you'll find Doheny, San Clemente, San Elijo, and South Carlsbad State Beaches. You can reserve these at www.reserveamerica.com. Each of the beaches has plenty to do, since none are too far from "civilization".

If you want to just take a road trip, how about taking I-10 to the end, then taking highway 1 up to Oxnard? From there, you can take 101 the rest of the way to Santa Barbara. As an added option, a mountain drive to Lake Cachuma and Solvang would be really nice.

Have fun!
