Question
In the Night Court TV episode, "The Appartment", the character Dan Fielding states that his date won't be insisting on having dinner because she was from California. What does he mean by that? Is there some sort of stereotype attached to Californians re this comment?

Answer
Hi Geoff,

This one's a bit out of the ordinary, and that episode is 27 years old. As I recall, the reason she wasn't going to be having dinner was because Dan wanted to take her straight to bed.

The reference to California may be because California is 3 hours later than New York, where the show takes place. We Californians tend to go to bed early, whereas New Yorkers seem to have no problem staying up past midnight or 2 AM. So someone from California generally wouldn't want to have dinner at that hour.

Or, it could be that she's so hot and horny, she just wants to go straight to bed for some sex. There is a bit of a stereotype that all girls from California are hot and easy.

Hope that helps
