Expert: Steve Springer - 6/5/2006

Question
Hi, I am looking for a group Campsite for a College student retreat. somewhere in the Southern California Area. I know about Santa Barbara and Ventura County but is there Anything in L.A or San Diego that you think Can accomodate 20-30 college students. We need someplace that has Bathrooms showers and fire rings possibly, and on a budget. Any suggestions would be great!

Thank you again,

Laura

Answer
Hi Laura,

I think Student derives from the Greek work Estudius, which means "won't have a spare dime for at least four years". Been there, done that, several times now. Besides myself, my oldest daughter just graduated and middle daughter is starting in the fall.

San Clemente State Beach, in south Orange County, has a group site that you can reserve. It's on a bluff overlooking the ocean. However, you asked for L.A. and S.D. county. Unfortunately, the State beaches and parks in SD county don't lend themselves to group camping. However, SD County has some nice parks: You can find them at http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/parks/camping/info.html.

In Los Angeles COunty, you could camp at one of the group campgrounds in Angeles National Forest (http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/recreation/develop-camp-group.shtml), or maybe at Frank Bonelli Regional Park (East Shore campground). SOme of the parks can be rather pricey, though.

You said you knew about Santa Barbara, but I just wanted to make sure that you knew about the group campsites at Carpinteria State Beach, as well as Jalama Beach (www.jalamabeach.com), a county park.

Hope this helps,

Steve
