California/Ready Made Campsites

Question
I'm coming from LA. I saw on a news program that there is a state park somewhere on the central CA coast that has "ready made" campsites where you can rent an already set up tent. I thought it was either Carpentaria or someplace near there. Do you know where this is? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Jo,

There are no state parks in the SB/Carpinteria area with ready-made tents (at least I am not aware of any), but I'll bet you are thinking of some of the county parks in Santa Barbara, like Lake Cachuma. There, they have "yurts", which are ready-made tents on a wooden platform. You can find information on them at http://www.sbparks.org/DOCS/Cachuma.html

There is also a campground which was a former state beach overflow area. It is called El Capitan Canyon, the former overflow for El Capitan State Beach. You can rent a "safari tent" there, but it's pretty pricey: $115-$135 per night.

I was just up at Carpinteria for Memorial Day, and there aren't any yurts there yet. But the state park system is planning on adding some yurts at some parks in the near future, so stay tuned!
