California/State beaches

QuestionI'm looking for the closest state beaches to the Los Angeles and Orange County area that have fire pits and allow drinking. I want to have a family get together, and this will be a day and early evening thing, no overnight involved. Any suggestions?
AnswerI am sorry to say that your requests are mutually exclusive. All state beaches prohibit alcolic beverages on the beach. This law is strictly enforced. In fact, I have seen people arrested and taken away (OK, the guy WAS a little belligerant, but he had his beer in plain view).
With that in mind, here is a list of beaches with fire pits:
Cabrillo- Not my favorite, located in San Pedro.
Dockweiler- Another un-favorite. It's great if you like to get REAL close to 747's, since they fly directly overhead as they are taking off from LAX. Ah, I love the smell of jet fuel.
Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica- This is one of my favs: Long, clean, sandy beaches. This is a great place to have your party. I suggest getting something large like a banner to help your guests find your spot, since "between lifeguard towers 22 and 23" can be a rather large area. If you get there early, you can back your car right up to the sand.
Huntington City Beach- Also an option, but parking can be a problem.
San Clemente State Beach and Califia- Both have fire pits and are nice, but I don't like taking the stairs down to the state beach. Those ice chests and stuff can be awfully heavy. Califia, by the pier, is a lot easier. In fact, you can take the TRAIN there. The platform is at the base of the pier.
Doheney State Beach- How about this: You can get a picnic table in the grassy area with trees, and still have access to the sand and the beach. Possibly the best of both worlds. You may want to call (714) 496-6171, to see if you can reserve a picnic area.
Corona Del Mar- Not a bad choice, although the beach is rather small. Arrive before noon, or parking lot may be full.
Hope this helps,
Steve
