Answer
Erik, you are killing me, my friend!

Time to teach you the first rule of California Camping: Reservations for July MUST be made in January. January 1, to be exact.

This is July 4th weekend, one of the most popular weekends of the year. I just did a check of all the campgrounds on the system within 200 miles, and they are all booked. Refugio, El Capitan, Carpinteria, McGrath, Broome, Sycamore Canyon, Leo Carillo, Doheney, San Clemente, San Onofre, San Elijo, South Carlsbad... all booked.Even the federal campgrounds above Santa Barbara are booked.

OK, here's a tip: Sunday morning, around 8AM, go to reserveamerica.com and make your reservations for MLK day weekend or New Year's. That's when they go on sale.

Go for Carpinteria, it's my favorite. Your kids will love it. The little town is within walking distance, there's a Foster's Freeze, a great local joint called The Spot, and a candy shop.

Sorry I couldn't give you better news. Better luck next time.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I`ve lived in the Valley, west side, east side, and South Bay, so I`m an expert on getting around town. I`m knowledgeable about all of the Southern California tourist attractions. I am also an expert on state beaches in Southern California, and have an expansive camping background. No relocation/moving questions, please.

I have lived in Southern California my entire life. I'm a "local", with expert knowledge of Southern California. I've done a lot of extensive traveling to NorCal, so I can provide answers about northern California as a visitor, and southern California as a local.

Not that this matters, but since it's required, I have a Bachelor's Degree. I also have a Master's Degree in the University of Life.
