California/Woodland

Question
Hi there Mr Tufft, I'm writing a short story (live in UK) and I've got this idea about it ending in woodland after leaving a road on the outskirts of LA.

I wonder if you know of a good place to set this please?

Thanks for your time!
H

Answer
The term "woodland" is used as the name of a town in Northern California, but generally speaking, low altitude woodland areas are uncommon in California.  Rather, within it's natural state, which no longer exists just outside LA, the landscape would be a savanna studded with ocassional oak trees.  At higher elevations outside LA--your better choice--the savanna gives way to pine forests.  The only existing stands of forest near LA would be the Tehachapi Mountains.  The other mountains to the east are more generally a barren moonscape of desert--the driest in North America.  Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehachapi_Mountains to learn more.
