Question
QUESTION: hi. driving in mid jan. with 4 kids (ages 6-13)from san fran to LA. our first trip. figuring we need a stopover spot since its long trip. any suggestions besides hearst castle...dont know if theyll be into that. someone mentioned grape picking. any idea where or another idea? thanks

ANSWER: Hi Debbie,

Hearst Castle is frequented by many thousands of families, but actually it's better appreciated by adults in good physical shape.  The collection of mostly 18th century Italian and Spanish art is difficult for children to appreciate and the climb of 300+ stairs during the tour could easily wear out a child younger than 10.  Check out my www.virtualtourist.com images and text for more details.

At the northern end of the central coast area is Monterey, where the Monterey Bay Aquarium is a big step above the average coastal aquarium pumping in fresh seawater.  Nearby Fisherman's Wharf is also good for kids.

If you decide that the southern end of the central coast is more what you want in preparation for an early entry into the LA metro area, then Hearst isn't a bad idea, but don't stay at San Simeon.  Look to staying at Morro Bay, about 30 minutes further south.  There are some reasonably priced motels near the outstanding rock.  A good walk along the beach will be cheap entertainment for the kids.  Hope this helps...

QUESTION: wow thanks. we will stay in la so its a long drive day trip that we are looking to break up. i did more research...what about: embarcadero bike rent, tideland park, or hardie park in cayucos.

Answer
You are certainly welcome.  If you have time to describe to me these in greater detail, I'd love to learn.  I'm not familiar with Hardie Park in Cayucos, for example.  Incidentally, don't fail to stop and watch the sea lions at Piedras Blancas, which is very near Hearst Castle.
