Question
Hi! Looking to find the best route (speed, ease) from Novato to Death Valley. Used to drive from L.A. to Death Valley a lot, not so easy from Novato! Don't know whether to go over 50 to 39 or to try going down 5. Any input would be great, thanks! --Lorin

Answer
Hi Lorin,

Going down 5 would be fastest and easiest, and the preferred route in winter. However, if it were late spring, summer, or early fall, I would definitely go up over 50, then down 395. It's not as fast, but MUCH more scenic. I would not want to go if there was recent snow or threat of it. Driving in the snow is highly overrated. I also like stopping off at Schatt's Bakery in Bishop.

If your only concern is speed and ease, then take 5.

UPDATE: After reviewing the different routes more closely, I noted that it is 590 miles via I-5, but only 560 miles via I-50 and 395. And according to my trip calculator, it's about the same amount of time. So, barring snow or threat of snow, I would take I-50 to 395.

Note that can probably save some time going via I-5, because one thing the trip planner's don't take into account is passing availability. If you want to move, it's much easier to do so on I-5.

Hope this helps,

Steve
