Cameras/Lenses for Canon Rebel XT
Expert: Abe - 2/13/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hi.
I have recently bought a canon rebel XT and would like to purchase lenses for this. I have a 50mm prime lense and a 70-300mm telephoto lens. What are the different types of lenses that i can buy to enhance my pictures and what is the most basic set that i should have? I like taking portraits and sceneries.
Thanks you
ANSWER: I would recommend something like the Sigma 17-70 as a walk-around lens. Your 50mm and 70-300mm should round out your outfit nicely. As for what types of lenses can enhance your photography, that is a lesson that requires much study and practice, but with the lenses you have and the one I've mentioned, you'll be well on your way.

QUESTION: Thank you for that reply. Will certainly shop around for Sigma 17-70 then. A follow-up question. What kind of basic filters can i buy to further enhance the set of lenses that i have? As i've said i like taking portraits and sceneries. What i've bought so far is a UV filter for my lenses. Thanks again.
AnswerI would highly recommend that you purchase circular polarizing (CP) filters for your lenses. The front of your lens will tell you the diameter, in millimeters. This is the size you'll need. They usually range from 52-77 mm. I buy mine from BHphoto.com
These filters polarize light at certain angles and bring out the rich colors of the scenes. This is excellent for landscapes, or for bright sunny days. CP's also help to remove reflections from shiny surfaces, like metal, water, and window's. Experiment for yourself. Once you do, you'll keep this filter on your lenses at all times except for when light conditions get low - at which point CP filters are a detriment because they reduce the amount of light entering the lens.
I highly recommend that you find and get involved with one of the many free or paid photography courses available on the web. A Google search will pull up dozens of options. Learn all about shutter speeds, apertures, and all of the other basics. If you do that, CP filters and lenses of all kinds will be much more useful to you.
Best of luck!
