Question
Hi John,

I want to buy a digital SLR for a friend as a gift and I am trying to decide between the two of these.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Digital SLR Camera - $499.99

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi Digital SLR Camera - $629.99

Both come with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm Lens.I dont mind shelling out and extra 150 bucks if the newer version is worth it.

Thanhs in advance :)

Answer
There really isn't much difference between these two cameras.  The main differences are a bigger LCD screen and a few more pixels.  The XT is a better deal.  However, if you are buying for a person who is a kind of "techie", you may want to pop for the XTi because he or she will look at the new one and think there is a big difference.  Picture quality between the two is the same.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.
