Question
I have just purchased a new Canon Rebel XS-digital . I have a Sigma lens 2.8- 28-I'm automatic focus on my old canon Rebel SLR which is about 8 years old. When I tried the Sigma lens on my new Rebel it took a couple of pictures then I received an error 99 which stated to clean the lens contact which I tried but to no avail. I returned the camera & was told that the camera could not "read" the lens .They suggested I purchase an adaptor on line? I called Sigma & they said that camera could not communicate with the lens & that I would need to purchase a new lens(old lenses do not have a rewritable chip). Would you agree & if  so what type of Sigma lens would you suggest I purchase. I really liked my old lens & would love to continue to use it.

Answer
Beverly,

Many old lenses (for Canon) from Sigma and Tamron will not work on current cameras.  I've never heard of an adapter to make a lens work.  If there is one, it would seem a bad idea to me.  If you must use sigma, I would suggest the 18-50 f2.8 EX DC Macro.  If you let me know how much money you are willing to spend, I could make other suggestions.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.
