Cameras/Megapixel verses Compression

Question
Camera Cannon 590 IS.  In general, what is the difference between the megapixel setting and the compression setting (normal, fine, super fine) on my digital camera?  They both seem to affect the picture quality and file size. Or if you can point me to a FAQ that answers this question.  Thanks.

Answer
Hello,

Superfine is the lowest compression, meaning that more of the original image is saved. This equals higher image quality and higher file size. As you move towards the lowest settings (i.e. normal), you get lower quality and smaller file sizes.

I would recommend always using superfine. You can always downsize the image later if you need to, but you can never go back up (to full size/least compression) without degrading the image.
