Question
Hello John,

I'm about to buy a new dslr and i don't know wich i can choose best.
I'm thinking of Canon eos 450 d with 18-55 is or 17-85(depends on costs) or the Nikon d60 with the 18-105 vr
With both cameras i think of the 50mm lens 1.8

I need it to shoot action fotos from table tennis without flash and some other action and portrets.

I hope you can tell me what you think its best for me.

Thanks
Mary

Answer
Well, the 50mm f/1.8 is the deciding factor here.  Nikon doesn't make a 50mm f1.8 that will work properly on the D60.  It won't auto-focus.  You would have to get the new 50mm f/1.4 (G).  And it is much more expensive than  the f/1.8.  Having said all that, you can't really go wrong with either camera.  One is as good as the other.  But if you want a cheap 50mm, you will have to get the Canon.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.
