Question
Hi,
I'm a pathologist and I'm looking for a good digital SLR camera to photograph pathology specimens in our lab. Any suggestions regarding camera make/lenses etc. Here's an example of the specimen I intend to photograph. http://webpathology.com/image.asp?case=31&n=1 Do you have any suggestions for lighting? Are there pre-packaged lighting kits available? Thanks for your help. Dharam Ramnani, MD, Virginia Urology Lab, Richmond, VA.

Answer
Dharam,

I don't know of any pre-packaged kit.  At least not from the manufacturers.

The camera you choose isn't all that important.  As long as you stick with Canon or Nikon.  Basically what you need is a 100mm (105mm in Nikons case) Macro lens and Macro Flash.  I like the Nikon better because if you get the Nikon D90 you can fire their Macro flash wirelessly.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.

I'm an "expert" under photography. I've many years experience in photo retail.John and Chris
