Cameras/Digital Cams - Opticla Zooms

Question
This is a generic question about the optical zoom in digital cameras.

I’ve had 2 point ‘n’ shoot digital cameras with 3X & 4X optical zooms (both Canon Powershot) in the past and the lens zooming mechanism has broken down in both the cameras.

I have a new camera that I wish to buy now and have an apprehension about the camera. This is a Canon SX110-IS, which has a larger - 10X optical zoom. Would you recommend smaller optical zoom cameras or will this larger optical zoom perform well for me? I am an amateur photographer and the usage is definitely not too high (about 50 pictures a month at max). The moot question here is, does the optical zoom function/operation weaken with usage i.e., the more I use it is it prone to break down faster?

Any pointers to my answer or any recommendation from your side is highly appreciated.

Answer
Utpal,

Hello.  You've got a very nice name.

I personally wouldn't worry about the zoom mechanism.
I don't like to say it out loud, but 9 times out of 10 the reason a zoom mechanism fails is because the user accidentally turned it on while the camera was in the case, or the lens hit something while it was turned.  That zoom is the most vulnerable part on ALL cameras, no matter who made them.
If the extra money doesn't bother you, I would suggest the Canon SX200is.  It is faster, has a nicer screen and uses a rechargeable battery.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.
