Question
Screen showing as purple sometimes will work and take pictures
can view pictures on card via camera but then stops working
and seems to drain batteries even when newly charged. Have
bought new batteries and still happens. Someone suggested
cleaning battery terminals which did help for a short time.

 Sorry, but your camera is actually broken or defective.  It is probably a bad sensor but could also be the computer itself.  It can't be the battery.  If it was a dirty terminal, the camera would either just shut off or more likely not come on at all.  The battery drain sounds like a separate problem to me.  One of two things can cause that.  Either the camera is not actually shutting all the way off or it has a short that is draining the battery.  

Probably time for a new camera.
