Question
I just inherited a bunch of Leica and Yashica camera equipment including Leica C1 body, M6 body, and a few Leica point n shoots, a Summicron-M 50mm f2, Summicron-M 90mm f2, and a Summicron-M 28mm f2.8 (I could have the 90mm & 28mm f-stops confused but I think I'm right) and a Leica SF240 flash.  Original boxes and instruction manuals for some of the equipment.  There are Yashica bodies & lenses too.  There is more equipment coming soon too.

How do I go about selling this equipemnt for fair and reasonable value?  Who do I talk to, what websites are recommended for estimating value & spark interest in sales?

I appreciate your time.

Jason

Answer

Hello Jason,

It sounds like you've inherited a VERY nice treasure trove of classic photo gear, and I will gladly help you evaluate everything, find buyers, and realize fair values on whatever pieces you want to sell.  However, it's all much too complicated to handle through AllExperts.  Geez, you have a LOT of things there right now, and you're saying there will be MORE!  So contact me directly at <silver@photographyhistory.com> with whatever model names, serial numbers, and most importantly some small digital pictures of the various items so I can properly assess condition, establish working values, etc.  Then I can recommend where and how to sell, or if that process intimidates you I could also take the gear to broker the sales for you myself for a small commission and that way you'd be certain to maximize your profit.  One step at a time.  Let's get a good look at what you have, and then we'll take it from there...

Best wishes,

Expertise

I'm an expert on all types of antique, classic, and contemporary cameras, as well as the general history of photography. Everything from ancient box cameras to modern single-lens-reflex; from simple Kodaks to sophisticated Leica and Nikon; from glass plates and roll film to movie and 35mm. I can identify and appraise them, explain how they work, and offer insights on their restoration and care. I can also provide historical background on vintage cameras and equipment, and guidelines on their purchase and sale.

Experience

I've been a professional photographer and a student of the history of photography for nearly 30 years. During that time my collection of vintage cameras and photographic paraphernalia has grown beyond 2000 significant pieces. I've published nearly 70 articles in the field, including 16 in the popular "Buying Classic Cameras" series for PHOTO SHOPPER MAGAZINE from 1995 to 1997, I'm currently a contributing editor for CAMERA SHOPPER MAGAZINE and McKEOWN'S PRICE GUIDE TO ANTIQUE AND CLASSIC CAMERAS, and I've written numerous entries for WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA. Portions of my collection have been displayed in museums and special exhibits in the past two decades, and many of the items were photographed as illustrations for books. In 1985 I founded the International Photographic Historical Organization (InPHO), which eventually evolved into its intended purpose as the best first resource for information on the history of photography. I'm also a founding member of several e-mail forums dedicated to specialized areas of photography, and I'm the moderator of the Internet Directory of Camera Collectors (IDCC), which remains the largest and most successful such group in the world.
