Question
Hi.   I'm looking at buying a new SLR camera, the one that i have is ancient.  I'm looking at spending about $1000 on a new camrea body and lens, (prob a 50mm, i'd probably buy a nicer variable focal length lens at a later date).   Any seggestions on makes/models?  thanks.

Answer
Laurence,

You didn't say wether you wanted film or digital, but I'm going to assume you want film.

$1000 can buy you alot of camera these days.  So there is two ways to approach this.  You could buy something like the Nikon N80 which would cost you $500 or $600 with a 50mm lens.  This would leave you enough money to start shopping for a good zoom.  Or you could go with a pro camera like the Nikon F100.  You would probably end up spending a little more than your $1000 though....  probably around $1200.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.
