Question
Hi my name is Gandharv Sirohi. My question to you is very very simple.
I have a canon film Slr camera with 50mm(1.8apperture)lence and speedlite flash. I want to buy a zoom lence(75mm to 200mm). My friend told me to buy a digital camera instead.
In terms of picture quality taken from both film and digital cameras which one is better. Is it worth spending about 8000Rs(indian)= about 188$ on the lence, or I go on to buy a digital SLR camera.
In short which one is better--- digital Slr or film Slr.

Answer
Gandharv,

Not really a fair question.  Plus, you can ask 2 different people and get 2 different answers.  I personally feel digital is better at this point....  but you have to compare equally.  If you want a digital camera as good as your film SLR, you must get a digital SLR.  If you only want to spend 8000Rs, then I would buy the lens because you would get a very poor digital camera for that price.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.
