Question
John:

I think this question is within your realm of expertise.

Do you have to use the Kodak EasyShare software when downloading digital pictures directly from a Kodak EasyShare Camera to a computer using an USB connection instead of the Kodak docking system?

I've downloaded Sony and Fuji cameras via USB without using the respective camera mfg.'s software.

A friend of mine was told by his son that he had to use the Kodak software but I can't believe that Kodak would make it that hard to download pictures when you are away from your home computer. I don't think that makes sense. It sure wouldn't be a good selling point for Kodak.

Thanks for your feedback.

Answer
I just had a look at the instruction book from one of Kodaks latest Easy-Share cameras.  I find no reference to the camera being mass-storeage or PTP ready.  And I could find no way to change transfer settings on the camera itself.  So it appears that your friends son is correct. You must load the Easy-Share software even when connecting via USB.  Kodak also warns that you must load their software before you ever connect the camera, or the software may not install properly.

You could just get a small card reader and carry it with the camera.  They are between $20 and $30.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.

Experience

I'm an "expert" under photography. I've many years experience in photo retail.John and Chris
