Hello John
I don't know if this problem is in your field of work but I don't know where to turn ,I can put best quality batterys in and they are flat in a matter of minuets sometimes it won't even switch on it says low battery, I have tried the best rechargeables and nimh .I think it takes too much current I have tested it [results below]
says low batt.at 2.6volts
takes 1 amp at any setting
takes 800m/a without lcd on

My only suggestion would be to try Lithium AA (not re-chargeable) to see if it behaves.  If not, then there is probably something wrong with the cameras power management.  This is not something you would want to have repaired but instead would replace the camera.
