Cameras/digital camera purchase

Question
Hi John, thanks for replying.  I guess I was going by those black Friday ads, where everyone seemed to have a digital camera for $70 or $80.  Also, I'm just looking for something to take decent pictures.  This is not a hobby at any stretch.  Just something to take family gatherings & special occasion pics, & easy to use.  I understand that batteries are a concern, but I know nothing about the memory card.  Could you explain a little about that?  Also, you state that Nikon is a good brand?  What about Kodak, Polaroid, etc?  What's good & not good?

Answer
Greg,

Personally I don't like to say that one brand is better overall than another.  However, I feel there are a "big five" when it comes to cameras.  Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax and Olympus.  As far as cards for point and shoots go, there are 3 types.  SD, XD and memory stick.  It really doesn't matter what kind a camera takes.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.

Experience

I'm an "expert" under photography. I've many years experience in photo retail.John and Chris
