Cameras/importing to computer

Question
Hi John,  I've had my Vivicam 6300 for about 9 months now and its worked
wonderfully until last week.  I had about 5 photos on it and when I plugged it
into my computer's usb nothing happened.  I have a Powerbook G4 and took
it to the Apple Store to have the iPhoto checked out and its working perfectly.
I went to a camera/electronics store to have the camera and cable checked
out and it wouldn't import to their computer either.  Nobody had been able to
tell me wether its the camera or the cable.  And, I can't find a similar cable
anywhere.   Can you help??

Answer
Terence,

Are the photos you want stored on a memory card, or are they on the cameras internal storage?  If the photos are on the card, I would simply take the card out and either buy a card reader to download them or take the card to a camera store and have them burned to a CD.  If they are on the internal memory, you will need get your hands on another cable just to trouble-shoot.  And I could find no source for the cables on-line.  You could take the camera to a shop that carries Vivitar and ask to borrow one of their cables long enough to download.  Take your computer with you.  And of course, if it won't work, you'll know it's the camera.  If it is the camera, you'll probably have to write the pictures off.  Even warranty service won't help get them back.  When a camera like that fails, they don't fix it.  They just send you a new one if it's still under warranty.

Expertise

I can answer questions about point and shoots and 35mm SLR`s from the 1960s to present. I can also handle most questions on digital cameras from "camera" makers, like Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Though usually I`m not too familiar with the driver interface, as 3rd party devices for download are more efficient. Sorry, but I can no longer answer questions about the value of old cameras.
