Question
My husband and I plan to move to Anchorage, AK in the spring of 2009 and want to drive
and move our belongings. We plan on taking only what will fit into the bed of our pick up
truck. We would like to leave the US via Montana and drive through Alberta, B.C. and The
Yukon Territory to get there.  Can you tell me what to expect at customs going into and
out of Canada? What should we do with our firearms?  Is it better to have a family member
ship them to us once we get to Alaska? How easy will it be to get hotel/motel rooms upon
arrival in these Canadian areas, should we try to schedule our dates and get
reservations?

Answer
Hello Teresa,

Wow, a very good question.  A little outside of my expertise I'm afraid but I will refer you to the Canadian Border Services Agency.  They can be found at: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/menu-eng.html and I'm sure will answer your border crossing and firearms questions.

As for the journey itself.  Booking accommodation along the route is never a bad idea.  Having said that, from personal experience, I have never had a problem just dropping into any Canadian town or city and getting accommodation.  This has always been true as long as there is no big event taking place at that time of the year for instance; the Calgary Stampede.  You said that it would be the Spring of next year though, so I see no great issues there.

My company even has discounted rates at some of the hotels in Calgary and Edmonton and you are welcome to use them if you wish.

I'm sorry I couldn't be too much help but I do wish you well for your future move,

Best Regards,

Barry Duffield
