Canada/passport??

Question
You probably get asked this a lot. I would like to visit a friend in Ontario this summer for a few days. I was told that since 9-11, you needed a passport to enter Canada. True? If so, how do I get one and how much do they cost?

Thanks,
Joe

Answer
It depends on where you are coming from. If you are from the States, you do not need a passport.

They are talking about changing the law, but it probably wont take effect for a couple of years. If you are an American, you will just need good identification. Photo ID such as a driver's license for sure. (The problem might not be getting into Canada, but getting back into the U.S. after your visit. They will want you to prove that you are who you say you are.)

If you are from Europe or Asia, I think you'll need a passport and probably a visitor's visa. Check the Canadian Government website to be sure.
