Question QUESTION: I am a Canadian Citizen and just moved to the United States in July of 2007. I am now a US permanent resident. Can I still collect my Canadian maternity benefits while living in the United States?
ANSWER: No you are not elegible. You must be working in Canada to collect. The rules are the same as for applying for EI except you do not have to be actively looking for work. In general, you must be a resident of Canada to receive Canadian social benefits (the only exception being certain pension benefits).

QUESTION: But as soon as I moved to the US, I was able to apply for my Canadian UI and receive UI as long as I was actively looking for work. Of course, the reason why I was able to do this was because I moved to the States due to my husband's line of work. Otherwise, I would of not been able to collect UI. So, I guess if I was pregnant during my move the the US, I would of been able to collect maternity benefits? There are no "exceptions" to the rule?
Answer I'm not a total expert on all the ins and outs of EI but I did find this URL which should answer your question. There is also a phone number provided which you might want to call.
