Canada - Government Information/Multiple Citizenship

Hello John,

I am an American citizen (as well as Irish citizen) with permanent residence status in Canada. I am currently applying for a Canadian citizenship.

Should I claim both countries (USA & Ireland) on my Canadian citizenship application?

Does Canada allow me to retain USA and Irish citizenship with a Canadian citizenship? And if you might know, does USA and Ireland allow a third citizenship from Canada?

I wish to proceed correctly as to not jeopardize my application for Canadian citizenship. If I have to forgo one of my other citizenships, I am willing to do that.

Thank you kindly and I appreciate your expertise on this matter.

Best regards,

Hello Alex,

As far as I know and you can read the reference from CIC here is your answer:

"Every country decides whom it considers to be a citizen. If more than one country recognizes you as a citizen, you have dual citizenship.

You do not apply for dual citizenship and there is no related certificate. Canadians are allowed to take foreign citizenship while keeping their Canadian citizenship.

If you are a permanent resident but not a Canadian citizen, ask the embassy of your country of citizenship about its rules before applying for Canadian citizenship"

Hope this helps
