Subject: Canada's Independence

Question
I've been trying to find the date of Canada's independence, and I've read that it was July 1, 1867.  But I keep hearing that it was in the 1940's.  Which is it?

Answer
Traditionally, we consider July 1st, 1867 to be the birthdate of Canada.  The reason you are getting conflicting information is over the word "independence".
Canada's emergence from England was a long process due nearly always to caution and care by Canada itself.
If I can use an example, when a person turns 18 they are considered an "adult" and independent of their parents, but the reality can be quite different.
